Native Angeleno $K makes his solo debut with the song “Who I Am,” premiered today by HipHopDX. The track is the first single from his forthcoming solo mixtape Mama’s Boy, a project dedicated to his mother.
“Who I Am,” in particular, is a song that hits close to home for $K. The song is a story of reflection after heartbreak: After celebrating his seven year anniversary with his high school sweetheart, the relationship came to an end. The date August 11th is precious to $K — today would have been their eight year anniversary.
The young rapper uses that emotional foundation to explore his musical wheelhouse, opening the song with raspy singing vocals, using the second half of the track to showcase his hard-hitting raps.
